About me

Posted by EYTYXHS on Monday, 25 February, 2008

Hello!

My name is FT, I come from Greece and my mission in life is to elevate the food IQ of humanity. I am an o a quest for finding the best ways to eat right and enjoy every bite. Because our food, deserves to be healthy, yummy and fun.

When I talk about eating right, I speak with the authority of someone who?s been to the other side: Yeah, I used to be one of those guys, and I lived on an over-cooked, over-processed, deplorable diet full of chemicals and additives. I hated myself for being overweight, and worse yet I had no clue where to begin the change I so desperately craved. All I knew was that some kind of change was necessary to turn my life around.

My quest for a healthy diet and lifestyle started during my university studies in Britain. My goal was not to change the world?but to change myself by losing weight and enjoying better health. And so I delved into scores of books, magazines, and scientific reports on dietary issues and cooking techniques, signed up for countless seminars and workshops offered by acclaimed chefs and dieticians, and started experimenting with new kinds of food and new kinds of cooking. Giving up would?ve meant giving up on myself, so I stubbornly stuck with it, and it made a world of difference. When all was said and done I was not just healthier, but happier, more confident?and still enjoyed great food!

I always had a passion with food. Everything started in mum’s kitchen. It’s this combination of sinfully delicious flavours and products – always made with the freshest ingredients – that brought about my incurable addiction to good food. Mediterranean cuisine is part of my genetic make-up and by traveling around every part of Greece I have tried and cooked with the best, real and fresh produce.

Apart from food, my other passion is life is music. I sing and play guitar and I love combing the two in a truly unique way. I sing when I cook and I write music about food. Foodmusic, that makes the food taste better. These songs have great impact with kids. Entertainment and music are amazing teaching tools that I use all the time when I promote the idea of tasty-healthy food.

Healthy eating doesn?t mean tasteless, boring food. With some basic food knowledge and skills, we can really enjoy healthy tasty meals. So do it for you? Raise your food IQ. So go ahead, play with your food, experiment, try new things and keep raising your food IQ. Because your food, deserves to be healthy, yummy and fun.

My food philosophy

Posted by EYTYXHS on Sunday, 24 February, 2008

Socrates once said, “The unexplored life is not worth living.” Well, that?s been my motto not only about life but about what sustains our life?food and nutrition.

I must admit that I wasn?t born with the insights of food nutiriton as I now foster. In fact, like most of you, I too have experienced the insightful journey towards self awareness and eventually learned to listen to the signs of what our bodies whisper to us in terms of what works and what doesn?t or helps us differentiate what it requires for nourishment and what it resists and counteracts to protect our health. It has been my keen passion to understand not only how our body functions but to also discover the joys of food while we maximize it to benefit and enhance our physical and mental well being. So you could say that my goal has been to explore the world of cuisine, as I strongly believe that without this practice, eating anything?would mean exactly that?simply engaging in the process of the act rather than entertaining our palate as well as satisfying our soul.

I feel blessed because aligned with my passion to explore foods as well as my commitment to live a natural lifestyle, I happen to live in Greece, one of the culinary mecca?s of the world. Having been born on the coast of the Mediterranean, I was lucky to have a mum who inspired me to honor authentic ingredients, taught me the application of classic Mediterranean flavors, helped me respect home made foods and appreciate the art of dining amongst family and friends, all of which in my home equalled to celebrating life.

Through extensive travels, research and countless interviews with professional chefs and restaurateurs, I have compiled considerable knowledge about food and as it relates to nutrition and the art of dining pleasure. I am here to share with you all that I?ve learned because I believe that the key is in educating ourselves and others. I agree with Socrates? reference about ignorance being the root of all evil because for most of us it is this lack of knowledge about the interconnection between food and nutrition that?s acting as the primary barrier to a long and healthy life for many. The more we know, the better we can take control of our life, our health and our happiness.

To me, food, life and celebration of living are in direct connection with each other. My intimate exposure to the Mediterranean cuisine has only encouraged me gain deeper insight and higher appreciation for the benefits of the foods that are simple, real and fresh.

Eating right

Posted by EYTYXHS on Sunday, 24 February, 2008

It then dawned on me that what I really wanted to do was share what I had learned with other people; people who were in the same situation I?d been before, who craved the same kind of change I had succeeded in making.  Indeed, I made it my life-long commitment to help them get their own life back. Television became a great medium for communicating my own experiences?and expertise?to a worldwide audience.

People are sometimes apprehensive of those who try to tell them what to eat, and it?s definitely not my intention to do that: Each one of us has to decide that for ourselves. My role is to help people discover new, exciting options of what to eat (options they may not have considered before), as well as help them decide when, how, and how much to eat. Above all, we should all know why we eat.

I won?t pretend I have all the answers; no one does, since the right answers vary from person to person. Instead, I will help you ask the right questions, and help you make the decisions that are right for you.  I?ve traveled around the world, discovered new ways of cooking and eating, learned from some of the most famous chefs and food experts: Now I?m here to share with you the experiences I?ve had, and help you use my own knowledge and expertise in ways that will make your own lives better.  So don?t think you?ve tried it all before (you haven?t), or that nothing works (I?m living proof that change is possible).  I want to be your partner in building a new healthier, happier you!

They say you can?t change the world, but ?they? are apparently wrong. Sure, you can?t change the entire world overnight, but that?s no reason to get discouraged: If you want to set out on the road to health and well-being, you must remember that the way to do it is by making small, gradual changes to your eating habits and outlook?because those are changes you can stick to! Count on the fact that those small changes will soon add up and pay off in a big way!  What we really need is big decisions to make small changes.

As we fight against the daunting waves of junk food that threaten to drown us every day, it?s important to make the decision to learn more about how to steer towards a healthier, happier direction. We should choose food that positively affects our mood and health, know why we eat the things we eat, and realize that healthy eating doesn?t mean tasteless, boring food. In short, we should develop a dietary conscience and enhance our dietary intelligence.

Food is not a necessary evil, it?s not an escape from the frustrations of our busy, overloaded life, and it?s not the ultimate source of pleasure and instant gratification.
You can eat right and still be happy, as long as you follow the five commandments of FT?s Food Bible:

  • Go for quality rather than quantity
  • Eat only when you?re hungry
  • Instead of rushing, enjoy every bite
  • Stop eating at the first sign of fullness
  • Think about what and why you eat before, during and after every meal

The power to follow these commandments is in our hands. So go ahead, play with your food, experiment, try new things, have fun?but do it without forgetting these commandments. The grand prize is a happier, more confident, healthier, longer life! Remember, it?s all about making big changes one small step at a time!

The Foodmusic Show

Posted by EYTYXHS on Saturday, 23 February, 2008

FT Bletsas, TV Show host, food expert and performer, has “cooked” yet another truly “delicious” live entertaining show. The recipe is really simple: passion for proper nutrition and love for children. These are the ingredients for the Foodmusic Show, an innovative nutrition-oriented programme that is reminiscent of a concert and a theatrical performance put together all at once. Without going to didactic extremes, the programme presents scientifically documented views and attempts to change the dietary practices of children and grown-ups. On stage, FT, with the aid of his guitar, blends music, lyrics and wholesome recipes in a show that exalts “smart” food, aspiring to increase our “nutrition intelligence” and awaken our dietary consciousness.

The Foodmusic Show was met with great success when it was recently televised in Cyprus, in collaboration with the Ministries of Health and Education of the Cyprus Republic, which staged performances at schools and organized seminars promoting wholesome cooking for children. These events were enthusiastically received by children and adults alike. The Cyprus Dietetic and Nutrition Association hailed the initiative and warmly congratulated the host of the programme for his communicability and the subject matter of the show. Also, the Association stressed the need for “the organization of more activities like these, which promote healthy dietary practices in a way that is digestible, vividly descriptive and enjoyable”.

The Importance of Healthy Eating for Young Children

Posted by EYTYXHS on Friday, 22 February, 2008

In this excerpt, I?d like to focus our attention to the playful and tasty pleasures of the Mediterranean Cuisine with respect to our children. They are, after all, the next generation who will lead our nutritional future. In a few years, our children will hopefully ponder the sustainability of our earth and explore what it means to live a ?green? life or consider the importance of minimizing our footprint or perhaps even maximize the principles of the 100-mile diet.

Sustainability of our earth and respecting our land first starts with learning how to respect ourselves and our own health. I?m sure you?ll agree when I say that the appreciation of a healthy and balanced lifestyle is a learned tendency, one which the longer we practice, the more consistent we become in our habits. Hence, the sooner we get started to learn healthy habits and the appreciation of a balanced healthy lifestyle, the more fluent we become in our adult years.

As attested by the British Medical Association in 2005, good nutrition is important for all, especially for younger children, especially younger than five years, as these years are critical for their development. Statistics from the World Health Organization show that ?over 22 million children in the world are under the age of five years are severely overweight.? The key is to get children trained as early on as possible, the first 5 years are most critical, so setting a healthy pattern early is important to help prepare them for the growth and development of the next decade.

Biography

Posted by EYTYXHS on Thursday, 21 February, 2008

FT Bletsas is a food specialist, TV show host and performer from Greece. He is also a musician, composer, writer and music producer who introduced the innovative idea of the Foodmusic Show; a performance where food, music and humor all come together into one truly tasty event!

Driven by his thirst for knowledge, he obtained Bachelor?s and Master?s degrees in Computer Science from Essex University and Imperial College in the UK, but turned down an offer for a faculty position at Imperial College and a high-paying IT job in the USA to follow his heart, finally indulging in his passion for nutrition, food, music, cooking, performing, learning, writing and travelling.

FT owes his earliest formative culinary experience to his mother, Mary, who initiated him into the secrets of cooking when he was very young: It was the combination of sinfully delicious flavors and ingredients that brought about his incurable addiction to good food! Having grown up on the Mediterranean coast, FT has developed a great love for Mediterranean cuisine and a passion for promoting great-tasting healthy food.

Eager to learn more, FT has traveled around the globe in search of local recipes, read extensively about food and healthy eating, attended seminars and was mentored by internationally acclaimed chefs, and today he is one of the most prominent food experts in Greece.

He offers healthy cooking classes and seminars. He is also a certified raw food chef & teacher, nutrition and wellness advisor with a Higher International Diploma in Nutrition, food business consultant, NLP practitioner, public speaker and personal coach offering one-to-one training to celebrities, business people, athletes and other high achievers. In 2010, he completed a E-Learning Psychology Management degree at Athens University.

One of FT’s goals has been to encourage young people and children develop healthy eating habits: He has played an active role in the Greek and Cypriot Ministry of Education?s Health Education Program, visited schools and summer camps, always advocating healthy eating in a cheerful, entertaining, musical way!

FT has also been active in promoting Greek food products through live cooking demonstrations, Foodmusic Shows, and International Food events, in collaboration with the Hellenic Foreign Trade Board and various other nationwide and EU-supported initiatives.

He is the host of a popular and entertaining food and travel TV show in Greece and Cyprus, broadcast around the globe through satellite and cable television networks. The show, “Mama’s Kitchen,” takes FT (and his guitar) to towns and villages all over Greece, showcasing home cooking by Greek moms, acclaimed chefs, and everyday people. He has also appeared as guest in hundred TV programs, live magazines and large public events. Moreover has contributed articles and recipes in several publications, authored cookbooks and written songs that combine his culinary and musical interests. Recently he has been traveling and filming abroad, and plans to expand his international presence to show new audiences how to play with their food and sing their way to a healthier, happier, tastier lifestyle!

In the beginning of 2010, during the Greek Debt crisis he released his book “Cooking Economy” with tips and recipes for tasty, healthy and most of all low-cost way of eating. The book that quickly became a best seller, now helps thousands of Greek people overcome the negative effects of IMF and EU financial terms.
